SHOWING NO MERCY
Sept. 30, 2004
The Big Show has lost his hair, JBL lost his Chief of Staff and, with each
passing week, it appears Heidenreich has lost his mind.
Just three days before No Mercy takes place at the Continental Airlines Arena,
the events of Thursday night’s SmackDown! had some Superstars feeling much
better about their chances Sunday and others slightly concerned.
For the second straight week, WWE Champion JBL was intent on sending a stern
message to Undertaker on the eve of their Last Ride Match at No Mercy.
So JBL made a bloody example of his opponent — Hardcore Holly — knocking him
nearly unconscious and opening a wound on his forehead with the help of a chair
and the steel steps.
But Taker interrupted JBL’s post-match proclamations with one of the most
ominous sights in SmackDown! history. The Phenom had kidnapped JBL Chief of
Staff Orlando Jordan, tied him to a giant version of the Undertaker’s symbol and
hung him from the Wichita, Kan., Coliseum rafters.
JBL was left speechless as Taker’s mental warfare may be starting to take its
tool on his psyche prior to No Mercy.
Kurt Angle’s No Mercy plans may have taken a hit as well Thursday.
After opening the program with a self-serving speech in which he applauded
himself for humiliating Big Show last week, he introduced the crowd to partners
in crime Luther Reigns and Mark Jindrak.
Of course, it was Reigns and Jindrak who helped Angle shave the top of Big
Show’s head after Angle took him down with a tranquilizer dart in Phoenix.
Angle was oozing with confidence about his No Mercy match with Show until
General Manager Theodore Long interrupted the love-fest and delivered a very
simple message to the Olympic Champ:
Not only are Jindrak and Reigns not allowed ringside Sunday, but if either one
of the cronies interferes, they lose their job. Jindrak and Reigns went on to
defeat Eddie Guerrero and Rob Van Dam in the main event, but that was the only
good news of the night for the Angle posse.
Show, all 7-foot-2 and 500 pounds of him, also appeared backstage shrouded in a
black shadow to hide his appearance. Let’s just say the WWE’s largest Superstar
isn’t too happy about what he sees in the mirror these days, and now Angle, sans
his meddling henchmen, could feel the retribution at No Mercy.
The Billy Kidman-Paul London feud also got uglier. After London lost his match
to Booker T, the United States Champion pulled out a chair and was poised to
inflict even more damage.
Kidman raced in and grabbed the chair from Booker T, but it turned out he wasn’t
saving his former tag team partner at all. Instead, Kidman did the honors
himself, drilling London in the back with a vicious shot.
Heidenreich, Paul Heyman’s unstable giant, read yet another poem. This one while
he was perched on top of the SmackDown! fist symbol, some 50 feet from the
floor.
The best fight outside the ring took place when Miss Jackie and Dawn Marie went
at it during a tag team match between The Dudleys and Rico & Charlie Haas.
Of course, John Cena also had a few words for Booker T leading up to their final
match for the United States Championship.
MATCH RESULTS:
